NEW YORK, May 11 (UPI) -- Sirius Satellite Radio and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York are launching a round-the-clock Catholic Channel.
The channel launching in the fall will "spread the word in a new way," archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling told Thursday's New York Times.
Sirius chief Mel Karmazin said the satellite radio provider proposed the Catholic Network several months after market research concluded there were not enough Catholic-themed radio shows in the United States.
While content for the new channel is still being decided, it's expected to be diverse, the Times said. Some of the ideas include talk shows, sacred music and daily Mass from New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral.
The Catholic Radio Association says 130 of the 17,000 licensed broadcast stations in the United States are Catholic compared to the 1,700 Protestant or evangelical Christian stations.
