Damian Marley carries on dad's legacy

NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- Reggae icon Bob Marley's son, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, won entertainer of the year at New York's 25th Annual International Reggae & World Music Awards.

His single, "Welcome to Jamrock," and album of the same name garnered Marley trophies for music video and recording artist of the year as well as songwriter of the year with his brother, Stephen, during the Saturday night ceremony at the Apollo Theater, Billboard.com reported.

Hall of fame honors were bestowed on Alton Ellis and Eddy Grant and the Africa Unite gala marking Bob Marley's 60th birthday in Ethiopia was named best concert of 2005.

Hasidic reggae star Matisyahu was named best new entertainer, Marcia Griffiths won best female vocalist, Jah Cure was named best male vocalist, Daddy Yankee won best reggaeton entertainer and Gyptian won the most promising entertainer award.

Tuff Gong chief Cristy Barber, the Agency Group's Peter Schwartz and producer Glen Adams all received special awards of appreciation, Billboard.com said.
