Nick at Nite prepares original sitcom

LOS ANGELES, April 19 (UPI) -- "Seinfeld" writer Carol Leifer is producing an original sitcom for Nickelodeon's Nick at Nite, it was reported Wednesday.

It would mark the network's first stab at an original comedy in more than 15 years, Daily Variety reported.

"The Darlene Westgor Project" will be based on the life of Westgor, who won Nick at Nite's "Search for the Funniest Mom in America" last year. Westgor stars in the pilot, being directed by Gil Junger.

"There's something very real about her that I think people will relate to," Nick at Nite's Sal Maniaci told Variety.

Leifer compared Westgor to "domestic goddess" Roseanne Barr.

"She reminds me of Roseanne before she was discovered," Leifer said. "Darlene has that same clear point of view and a very dry, take-charge kind of attitude."
