The executive producer and director was working on the set of FX's "The Shield" as recently as Thursday, using a motorized wheelchair to meet with writers, casting staff in preparation for the next episode.

"We knew his body was letting him down but his mind never deteriorated," "The Shield" creator and executive producer, Shawn Ryan, told The Reporter.

Brazil won two Emmys for producing NBC's "Hill Street Blues" in the early 1980s and directed many primetime series episodes including "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "JAG," "CSI: Miami" and "Nip/Tuck."

In tribute to Brazil, "The Shield" did not shut down production this week.

"Everyone, I think, felt more comfortable staying together and working rather than sitting at home trying to deal with this," Ryan said.

Brazil is survived by his wife, a daughter, a son, his parents and a brother.
