
LOS ANGELES, April 10 (UPI) -- Actress Charlize Theron, who has said she will not marry Stuart Townsend until gays can marry too, was honored for her support at the GLAAD Awards.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, GLAAD, gave Theron its Vanguard Award, for raising public awareness of gay issues, during its 17th annual awards ceremony Saturday night at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.
Theron won an Oscar in 2003 for her portrayal of lesbian serial killer Aileen Wuornos in "Monster."
NBC's "Will & Grace" won the GLAAD award for outstanding comedy TV series while Showtime's "The L Word" was named outstanding TV drama series. Individual episodes of NBC's "My Name Is Earl" and CBS's "Cold Case" were honored as well.
The cable Sundance Channel and Logo's "TransGeneration" won for outstanding documentary while "Transamerica" won for outstanding film in limited release.
Singer Melissa Etheridge was presented the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her work promoting equal rights for gays.
The ceremony was taped for broadcast on Logo Saturday and VH1 Sunday.
