Potent lights fight X-rated video neighbor

ATLANTA, April 1 (UPI) -- Atlanta's New American Shakespeare Tavern unveiled a facelift including powerful lights to compete with the next-door neighbor -- an X-rated video store.

The theater's bland wooden doorway has been replaced with leaded-glass windows, a balcony where performers can court the street crowd and plenty of lights in a $300,000 makeover.

"We're shouting down our next-door neighbor," the theater company's Jeff Watkins told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We want to flood the place with light outside so people don't get to stand in the shadows, because there won't be any."

While Watkins said managers of the next-door Inserection "are not hard to get along with" he also said, "I'd rather they be somewhere else."

Video store officials blamed a nearby homeless shelter for the people who loiter on the street below its red-and-lavender neon sign -- unable to see the nude dancers performing inside.
