LOS ANGELES, March 30 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles City Council has agreed to pay $1.1 million fine in restitution to the family of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G.
A federal judge ordered the fine after it came out that evidence possibly implicating two rogue police officers was withheld by the LAPD during the trial in a wrongful death suit filed against the city by the family.
The suit contended Death Row Records founder Marion "Suge" Knight paid the officers to killed Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace on March 9, 1997.
U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper declared a mistrial in the civil suit and ordered the city to reimburse the family $1.1 million to cover their legal costs.
"It's unfortunate, but we don't have any choice," Councilman Dennis Zine said after Wednesday's 11-0 vote. "We had a case here where an experienced detective made a mistake and the city and its taxpayers have to pay for it."
The LAPD was investigating the "error" in the filing and releasing of all the documents pertaining to the case.
