Prince Charles wins in journal suit

LONDON, March 18 (UPI) -- The Mail on Sunday is expected to appeal a London High Court ruling that its publishing of Prince Charles' journal was an invasion of privacy.

The newspaper in November published excerpts from Charles' 1997 journal in which he called Chinese leaders "appalling old waxworks" and criticized the "Chinese takeaway" of Hong Kong.

The judge ruled Friday the Mail on Sunday breached copyright and confidentiality laws by publishing the journal, which was one of eight given to the newspaper by a former disgruntled employee of the prince, the Guardian reported.

Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Mail on Sunday, faces a fine of 500,000 pounds ($878,302).

"The last thing we wanted to do was to take legal proceedings against Associated Newspapers, but we have won on all the important points of principle ... It was a matter of principle over a stolen document being made public," the prince's secretary, Michael Peat, said after the ruling.

Attorneys for Associated Newspapers said they would seek permission to file an appeal.
