DUBLIN, Ireland, March 6 (UPI) -- Former Boomtown Rats frontman turned political activist Bob Geldof has been awarded Ireland's freedom of Dublin award.

"I can't think of a more beautiful day for me," Geldof, 55, was quoted as saying Sunday by the BBC in accepting a Waterford Crystal globe in recognition of his humanitarian work.

"To be a freeman of one of the most free cities on the planet is indeed something," he added.

Geldof was flanked by his 91-year-old father and his daughters, Peaches, Pixie and Tiger, the BBC said.

Also honored Sunday was Olympic track champ Ronnie Delaney, who won a gold medal for Ireland in 1956.

The pair joins an esteemed list of "freemen of the Irish capital" that includes members of U2, former U.S. President Bill Clinton and South African President Nelson Mandela.
