SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 4 (UPI) -- "Brokeback Mountain" won the top prize at the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., Saturday.
The romantic drama about two gay cowboys -- which led the field with eight Oscar nominations this year -- was named best feature and its director, Ang Lee, won the directing award, The Hollywood Reporter said.
"Capote," "Crash" and "Transamerica" also won two awards each.
"Capote" -- an account of author Truman Capote's work on the classic book "In Cold Blood" -- won a best actor award for Philip Seymour Hoffman and a screenwriting honor for Dan Futterman.
"Crash" -- a complex tale of racial tension and human relations -- was named best first feature. Matt Dillon won a supporting actor award for his performance as a racially insensitive police officer.
Felicity Huffman won for best actress for her performance as a transgender woman in "Transamerica" -- which also won for best first screenplay.
"Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" was named best documentary.
