VUNG TAU, Vietnam, March 2 (UPI) -- British rocker Gary Glitter denied sexually abusing two young Vietnamese girls during the first day of his trial in Vung Tau.
The 61-year-old former glam rocker born Paul Gadd faces a maximum seven years in jail if he is convicted of abusing the 11- and 12-year-old girls.
The trial is closed to the public because of the age of the victims.
His attorney told the BBC during the first day of testimony, the "Rock and Roll Parts 1 and 2" singer told the court he was merely teaching the girls to speak English.
Glitter was arrested Nov. 19 while trying to leave the country from the Ho Chi Minh City Airport.
Prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to charge Glitter with the most severe crime, child rape, which carries a maximum penalty of death.
A verdict in his abuse trial is expected to be rendered Friday.
Glitter was convicted on child porn charges in 1999 and spent four months in a British prison. He was permanently expelled from Cambodia in 2002.
