LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Javier Bardem has signed on to star in Mike Newell's epic romance, "Love in the Time of Cholera."

New Line Cinema's film is based on the novel by Nobel Prize-winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The story follows a young man who loses the woman of his dreams to a rich man, so he spends the next 50 years trying to become what he considers to be worthy of her affections, The Reporter said.

The screenplay was written by Ronald Harwood, who won an Oscar for penning "The Pianist."
