Stallone to be key to wiretap case

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Sylvestor Stallone is expected to be a key witness in the government's wiretapping case against Hollywood private eye Anthony Pellicano.

The indictment handed down by a federal grand jury last week said an associate of the P.I. tried to access phone records belonging to a "Johnny Friendly," the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Johnny Friendly" was the name of the crooked union boss in the 1954 classic, "On the Waterfront," and is frequently used by Stallone when he travels, sources told the Times.

The indictment mentions Stallone by name elsewhere, saying his phone lines were wiretapped while he was involved in a lawsuit with a client of entertainment attorney Bert Fields, the Times said.

When asked for comment, the U.S. attorney's office would only say "Johnny Friendly" was a pseudonym, the newspaper said.

Stallone's spokeswoman's only comment was: "We have no comment."

Sean Bean goes undercover for Fox TV

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- "Lord of the Rings" star Sean "Boromir" Bean will play an undercover federal prosecutor in the Fox TV pilot for "Fearless."

The show follows the prosecutor as he infiltrates a massive underworld organized-crime mob, The Hollywood Reporter said.

In addition to his stint in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Bean appeared last year in "The Dark," "The Island," "Flightplan" and "North Country."

Latin jazz great Ray Barretto dead at 76

HACKENSACK, N.J., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Grammy Award-winning Latin percussionist Ray Barretto has died in a Hackensack, N.J., hospital at age 76.

Barretto died Friday surrounded by family from pneumonia he caught after undergoing heart bypass surgery last month, the Hackensack (N.J.) record reported Saturday.

The New York native known as "Mr. Hard Hands" was a pioneer of the salsa movement and best known for infusing his conga playing with jazz.

He replaced Mongo Santamaria in the Tito Puente Orchestra in the late 1950s and went on to lead his own band for four decades.

Barretto released more than 70 albums, including the groundbreaking 1979 "Ricanstruction."

He won his Grammy in 1979 for the song, "Ritmo en el Corazon" (Rhythm in the Heart) with singer Celia Cruz and was nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award for his September album, "Time Was -- Time Is."

He was named one of the National Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Masters of 2006 and is a member of International Latin Music Hall of Fame.

Barretto is survived by his wife and two sons.

'Kids' film skater found dead of overdose

NEW YORK, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A skateboarder from the 1995 movie "Kids" has died in New York from what was believed to have been a cocaine overdose.

Harold Hunter was found dead in his apartment Friday with cocaine "on and around" his body, police told Saturday's New York Post.

Hunter, 31, skated in Larry Clark's movie about an HIV-positive skateboarder.

His sister, Rebecca Atkins, told the Post: "He was saying stuff like, 'When I die I'm going to be famous.'

"He used to have this saying, 'Legends never die,'" she added.
