Bollywood star convicted of poaching

JODHPUR, India, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was sentenced to one year in prison for killing two protected blackbuck antelopes in west India in 1998.

Khan's attorney said he will appeal the conviction on the grounds his client was "falsely implicated," the BBC reported Friday. The actor has one month to file an appeal.

Seven other people were acquitted of poaching charges after the trial that lasted seven years in Jodhpur, about 300 miles southwest of Delhi.

A crowd gathered outside the courthouse comprised of Khan fans and animal rights activists, the BBC said.

In an outburst last month, Khan told the court to "hang me."

"I am tired of such lengthy proceedings," he said.

Khan, 40, now faces trial in Bombay for a 2002 hit-and-run that killed one person and injured three others. He has pleaded innocent to 10 charges filed against him for allegedly driving over a group of sleeping homeless people.
