Jesse L. Martin to portray Marvin Gaye

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- "Law & Order" star Jessie L. Martin will portray legendary soul singer Marvin Gaye in a big screen biopic called "Sexual Healing."

Lauren Goodman will write and direct the independent production, The Hollywood Reporter said Monday.

Because of reported issues regarding the rights to use Gaye's music during his Motown years, the film will reportedly hone in on Gaye's life after he left the legendary label, The Reporter said. He died at age 45 in 1984.

Although Martin is best known for his NBC "Law & Order" role, he starred in the original Broadway version of "Rent" and reprised his role for the Hollywood version of the musical in 2005.
