
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- "Brokeback Mountain" was named best adapted screenplay and "Crash" won the top original screenplay award from the Writers Guild of America.
The 58th annual Writers Guild of America Awards were doled out Saturday night during simultaneous ceremonies at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angles and New York's Pierre Hotel, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.
Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana were on hand to collect their "Brokeback" trophy as were Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco for "Crash."
Both films are Oscar contenders for best picture.
In other categories, Larry David took writing honors for TV comedy for his HBO show "Curb Your Enthusiasm" while the scribes at CBS' "The Young & the Restless" won the WGA Award for daytime serial writing.
Children's TV writing awards went to Noggin's "New Charlie" and Showtime's "Edge of America."
"House" took the TV drama award, "The Simpsons" won for TV animation writing, and HBO took a pair of WGA Awards for "Warm Springs" and "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers."
"The Kennedy Center Honors" took the TV comedy/variety specials award and the writing team for NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" won in the comedy/variety series category.
Showtime's "Weeds" won in the episodic comedy category, ABC's "Lost" won top writing in a TV dramatic series and the best new series was ABC's "Grey's Anatomy."
