Actor pleads guilty in fake cop caper

NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- An actor arrested at a New York courthouse with an NYPD uniform, fake gun and real ammunition clip has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Preston Handy, 63, was arrested at Bronx Superior Court April 15, 2005, and charged with petty larceny and possession of stolen property involving a dispute with a former roommate, the New York Post reported.

Handy showed court officers a Screen Actors Guild membership card and said he was carrying the costume because he was going to appear as an extra in "Law and Order: Criminal Intent" right after his court hearing.

He was originally charged with criminal impersonation, but told The Post he decided to plead guilty to the lesser charge of disorderly conduct.

"I was told that that was the only thing I could do without the risk of a criminal record and a lengthy trial," he said.

He was given a conditional discharge.
