German filmmaker Franz Seitz dead at 84

MUNICH, Germany, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Oscar-winning producer Franz Seitz has died in Germany at age 84.

The producer of "The Tin Drum" had been in ill health for some time and died Jan. 19 at his home in Munich, Daily Variety reported Thursday.

Seitz was born into a filmmaking family, Variety noted. His father was director/writer/producer Franz Seitz Sr. and his mother was actress Anni Terofal.

He started his film career as a set designer.

Seitz worked with his father only once, producing "Der Letzte Schuss" (The Last Shot), which was directed by the elder Seitz in 1951.

Later, he founded the production company Allegro with Jochen Genzow and wrote and produced films based on German contemporary literature.

"The Tin Drum" not only won an Oscar for best foreign film in 1979, it also took the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

His movies weren't all serious, however, and many of his films were silly comedies, Variety said.

He was still working in the 1990s.
