Garrett pleads innocent to heroin charge

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Former teen idol Leif Garrett has pleaded innocent to felony heroin possession charges in Los Angeles.

Garrett, 44, was detained during the weekend for trying to ride the subway without a ticket and a subsequent search of the singer and actor turned up the drug, police said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Melissa Widdifield urged Garrett to enter a drug-treatment program during his court appearance Wednesday, E! Online reported.

"I would recommend you avail yourself of this drug court program," she said. "It strikes me as something you need at this point."

Garrett told the court he wanted to consult an attorney before making a decision. He remains jailed without bond on a warrant charging him with alleged probation violation in a previous drug arrest.
