NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- New York's Harlem Boy's Choir has received nearly $1 million in pledges in less than a week, nearly twice the goal set for the entire month.
Former New York Mayor David Dinkins and U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., have been calling wealthy donors such as Oprah Winfrey, Aretha Franklin and George Foreman, trying to raise $5 million needed to bring the famous musical group out of debt, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.
The choir has until Jan. 31 to get its finances in order or face eviction from the New York City Public Schools building it has occupied since 1993.
School officials ordered the choir to leave the building after money problems led to an exodus of teachers who were supposed to be providing music instruction to students.
Unpaid taxes make up roughly $3 million of the choir's debt, the Daily News said.
Clara Miller, president and CEO of the Nonprofit Finance Fund, an investment bank for non-profits, told the Daily News debt from failure to pay withholding taxes is "very rare and very bad."
