NEW YORK, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Michigan native Stephen Lynch has been tapped to play the Adam Sandler role in the Broadway version of the film "The Wedding Singer."

Veteran Producer Margo Lion and New Line Cinema -- the team that created a Broadway smash out of John Waters' movie, "Hairspray" -- are looking to repeat the feat when "The Wedding Singer" opens on Broadway April 27, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

"We're not here to put the movie on the stage," Lion says. "We want to reimagine it. I think Stephen's going to be a big new star!"

Lynch said he has made "a concerted effort" to stay away from the movie, the Post said.

"Into the Woods" star Laura Benanti will appear in Drew Barrymore's role of Julia.

The score and lyrics were written by Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar and filmwriter Tim Herlihy co-wrote the book for the show.
