Theater owner settles wheelchair suit

BOSTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Theater chain owner National Amusements Inc. of Dedham, Mass., Monday reached a settlement in a federal lawsuit over wheelchair accessibility.

The U.S. attorney's office in Boston announced the settlement the same day the trial was to begin in federal court.

U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan said the suit was filed in December 2000 because of a lack of wheelchair access in National Amusement's newer, stadium-style movie theaters. People in wheelchairs could only sit in the back of the theaters.

National Amusements settled the suit by filing a consent order under the Americans with Disabilities Act promising to provide improved lines of sight for wheelchair-bound moviegoers in its current and future stadium-style theaters, the release said.

National Amusements Inc. operates 1,390 screens in the United States, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
