Bryan Adams to play Karachi benefit

KARACHI, Pakistan, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Canadian rocker Bryan Adams has agreed to perform a benefit concert in Karachi, Pakistan to help victims of the October earthquake.

The Oct. 8, 2005, quake killed nearly 74,000 people and left 3.5 million others homeless.

An estimated 20,000 people are expected to attend the concert -- the first by a major rock star in Pakistan, the BBC reported Monday.

Adams had a concert scheduled in Pakistan five years ago, but it was canceled after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"This is the first time that an artist of Bryan Adam's caliber is coming to Pakistan," benefit organizer Salman Iqbal told the BBC. "We want to show to the world that Pakistan is a friendly country and its people love music and Karachi is no more a troubled city."

A date for the benefit show has not yet been set.
