ESPN documentary to get theatrical release

NEW YORK, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A full-length sports documentary produced by ESPN will play in select U.S. theaters before it hits the cable sports network.

"Through the Fire," about prep basketball sensation Sebastian Telfair, will be ESPN's first theatrical release, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.

The film will open Feb. 10 in New York, then roll out to selective urban markets. If it catches fire, it's possible the film will still be in theaters when ESPN airs it March 12, a spokesman for the network said.

ESPN sister company Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release the documentary for home video two days later.

New York is getting the first look at "Through the Fire" because Telfair went to high school in Brooklyn. The film follows the high school senior as he decides to skip college and enter the NBA draft.

He was drafted in the first round by the Portland Trailblazers, where he is the starting point guard.
