LOS ANGELES, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya and his wife, Millie Corretjer, have kicked off the new year by adding to the family.

Their son, Oscar Gabriel, was born Dec. 29 at 9 pounds, 7 ounces, People magazine reported Tuesday.

"It is with great joy that we share the arrival of our long awaited gift from God," the couple said in a statement. "We thank God that we are all healthy. We are now enjoying this moment with our family as we begin this new journey. In this season, we wish everyone much happiness and blessings just like we are enjoying ourselves with our son. Happy New Year! "

De La Hoya, 32, and Corretjer, a 31-year-old Puerto Rican pop singer, were married Oct. 5, 2001.

De La Hoya has two children -- Jacob, 7, and Atiana, 6 -- from previous relationships.
