Major U.S. networks turn to telenovas

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- ABC and CBS are forging ahead with plans to bring English-language versions of Mexico's popular telenovas to U.S. primetime.

CBS and ABC both plan to launch close-ended hourlong scripted dramas next summer, Daily Variety reported Thursday.

An ABC programming spokesman said the network is looking at already-produced formats and its show could end up running as many as five nights a week.

CBS, meanwhile, is developing its own scripts with a mix of formats, Variety said.

A number of different writers are under consideration at CBS including Jackie Collins, Jonathan Prince and Rama Stagner of "American Dreams," producer Denise Di Novi and former "Knots Landing" scribes Jim and Diane Stanley, and "Guiding Light" head writer David Kreizman.
