STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Swedish government has rejected digital radio because residents would have to buy new equipment to be able to hear the signal.

Swedes own up to 30 million analog radio sets that would be rendered useless by a switch to a digital signal, The Local reported Wednesday.

Culture Minister Leif Pagrotsky said the government sees no reason for the waste or for the cost of running both analog and digital networks.

Digital audio broadcasts began trials in Sweden 10 years ago but only 7,000 digital audio receivers have been sold in that time, The Local said.
