LONDON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Britain's ITV News Channel is closing its doors after the first of the year, it was announced Wednesday.
Anywhere from 25 to 70 jobs will be lost when the channel goes dark, Sky News said.
"It's a sad day for British journalism," Sky News President Nick Pollard said. "The ITV news channel was third in the market, but a very lively product. It is always sad to see any journalistic outlet close down."
The National Union of Journalists said the closure was an "absolute outrage".
"The question we have asked ourselves is what does news look like in five or 10 years' time?" ITV Director Simon Shaps said. "The answer is that it looks very different from the traditional 24-hour rolling news format that we are used to now."
He said ITV is working to develop news on demand "via a variety of different platforms."
