CBS News wooing Couric for anchor job

NEW YORK, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- NBC's "Today" show co-anchor Katie Couric could end up behind the evening news desk at competitor CBS News.

CBS News President Sean McManus has pegged Couric as his top choice for "CBS Evening News" anchor, three senior editorial employees at CBS and NBC told The Los Angeles Times.

Couric is reportedly mulling the possibility, but the Times noted she is under contract to NBC until May and the Peacock Net would mostly likely fight to hold onto the 15-year "Today" show veteran. Her current contract was believed to be worth $60 million over 4 1/2 years.

NBC News President Steve Capus told the Times any speculation on where Couric would end up at this point is "premature."

Representatives for Couric and CBS refused to comment.

CBS Washington Correspondent Bob Schieffer took over as interim anchor after Dan Rather stepped down from the evening newscast last spring, with the impression the stint would only last a few months.
