Independent Spirit Award nods announced

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale" led the field with six nominations for the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards, announced Tuesday in Los Angeles.

"The Squid and the Whale" will compete for best film against "Brokeback Mountain," "Capote," "Good Night, and Good Luck" and "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada," The Hollywood Reporter said.

Best actor nominees are "Squid's" Jeff Daniels; "Capote's" Philip Seymour Hoffman; "Hustle & Flow's" Terrence Howard; "Brokeback Mountain's" Heath Ledger and David Strathairn of "Good Night, and Good Luck."

"Squid" earned a best actress nod for Laura Linney along with "Transamerica's" Felicity Huffman; Dina Korzun for "Forty Shades of Blue;" "Lackawanna Blues'" S. Epatha Merkerson and "Room's" Cyndi Williams.

The Independent Spirit Awards recognize U.S. indie films made for less than $20 million. The ceremony is scheduled March 4 in Santa Monica.
