RESTON, Va., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- The American College of Radiology Tuesday warned actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes against performing their own fetal ultrasound exams.

Cruise has told interviews he bought his own sonogram machine so he could watch his child develop inside Holmes, his fiancee.

But the ACR issued a release saying not only is the practice unsafe, it could be violation of federal law.

The Food and Drug Administration has said fetal ultrasound should only be performed for medical purposes by certified technologists with a prescription from an appropriately licensed provider, the ACR said.

"Untrained people, even if they have the financial means, should not buy, or be allowed to buy and operate, ultrasound machines which are, in fact, medical devices and should not be used without a medical indication," Chairman of the ACR Ultrasound Commission Carol M. Rumack said in a statement.

She said, "the ACR is concerned that Tom Cruise has been badly advised."
