MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Grammy-winning banjo player Earl Scruggs was "a little sore" Monday after a stage tumble in Myrtle Beach, S.C., left him with 12 stitches above the eye.
The 81-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member was leaving the Convention Center stage after performing at the South Carolina State Bluegrass Festival Saturday night when he unknowingly stepped off a 4-foot drop, the Myrtle Beach (S.C.) Sun News reported Monday.
"It was just a freak accident that happened," Norman Adams, promoter of the S.C. State Bluegrass Festival, told the newspaper.
He was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he was stitched up, checked over and released.
"He was fine when he left Myrtle Beach," Adams said. "He's doing great and rode back to Nashville on the bus."
Scruggs' friend, Susanna Buck, said he was alert and conscious after the fall.
"He'll probably be a little sore for a few days," she said. "But he'll be back (playing) in no time."
