Bono blasts Canada over foreign aid

OTTAWA, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- U2 frontman Bono says he is "crushed" by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's failure to set a target date to meet the international foreign aid target.

Many governments have pledged to contribute 0.7 percent of their gross domestic product by 2015 to help eliminate global poverty.

"I'm personally not just disappointed -- I'm crushed, because I really believed the Prime Minister would do that," the Irish rocker told a Friday news conference in Ottawa, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported.

Citing Canada's healthy economy and a surplus in its federal treasury, Bono warned Martin was missing out on "a huge opportunity."

Canada currently donates about 0.3 percent of its gdp to foreign aid, the newspaper said.

"I'm mystified by the man, actually, at this point, because I like him very much personally and I just think it's a huge opportunity that he's missing out on," Bono said.
