Fontana fights censors over new show

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Veteran TV producer Tom Fontana reportedly is battling with WB network censors over content in his new show, "The Bedford Diaries."

The latest show from the producer of "St. Elsewhere," "Homicide" and "Oz," revolves around college students in a sexuality class, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

"I haven't had these kinds of fights since my early days in television," Fontana told the newspaper.

The show stars Matthew Modine, Audra McDonald, Peter Gerety and Milo Ventimiglia, formerly of "The Gilmore Girls."

The students are required to keep video diaries, hence the show's title.

Fontana said he is going for honesty over titillation, but the censors apparently don't see it that way.

"Every network has their own rules, he said. "And from a creative point of view I couldn't be happier dealing with the WB. But we're not trying to pull anything over on anybody here.

"But you talk to the guy from broadcast standards and I'm Janet Jackson or something."
