FAJARDO, Puerto Rico, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A Rolling Stone cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in bed together was chosen Monday as the best magazine cover in the last 40 years.
The American Magazine Conference meeting in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, unveiled the Top 40 greatest magazine covers starting with the Jan. 22, 1981, Rolling Stone shot of the couple. Esquire magazine had three covers among the Top 10, while the New Yorker had two.
No. 2 on the list was naked, pregnant Demi Moore on Vanity Fair's August 1981 cover, followed by Esquire's April 1968 cover of Muhammad Ali with arrows piercing his body.
Ranked No. 4 was Saul Steinberg's March 29, 1976, The New Yorker cover, "View of the World from 9th Avenue," followed by Esquire at No.5 for its May 1969 shot of artist Andy Warhol in a Campbell's soup can.
The New Yorker's black-on-black Sept. 24, 2001 World Trade Center cover was No. 6 followed by National Lampoon's infamous "If you don't buy this magazine we'll shoot this dog" cover from January 1973 in the No. 7 slot.
The Top 10 is filled out with Esquire's "Oh my God -- we hit a little girl" cover from October 1966, the September 1992 Harper's Bazaar cover featuring Linda Evangelista in the "Era of Elegance" and the National Geographic cover of a 12-year-old Afghan refugee.
