Jolie, a goodwill ambassador since 2001, said it was "very strange" to get an award for the No. 2 greatest thing in her life after being mother to her two adopted children.

She thanked the United Nations for "fighting for justice" and said she was "very, very privileged to be a very small part of it."

Bush addressed the honorees by videotape, saying: "You've both used your gifts and talents to make the world a better place."
