George and Ann Lopez speak out for kidneys

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Comedian George Lopez and his wife, Ann, Wednesday were named national spokesmen for the National Kidney Foundation.

The star of his eponymous ABC sitcom received one of his wife's kidneys last April. Lopez would have died without the transplant due to a genetic condition that destroyed his own kidneys.

"If laughter is the best medicine, I promise to continue to make you laugh as my wife and I work together with the National Kidney Foundation to save lives," Lopez said in a news release.

The couple will be honorary chairmen of the foundation's nationwide Kidney Walk Program and Lopez will play golf for Team Southern California at the National Kidney Foundation's 2006 U.S. Transplant Games in Louisville next summer.
