British journal blames film for STD rise

LONDON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Britain's Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine blames Hollywood for the rise in sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies.

The Journal article singles out the 2003 James Bond thriller "Die Another Day" and Sharon Stone's 1991 "Basic Instinct," saying both films have several instances of unprotected sex without mentioning any of the potential dangers involved, the World Entertainment News Network reported Monday.

"The social norm being presented in movies is concerning, given the HIV and illicit drug pandemics in developing and industrialized countries," wrote Dr. Hasantha Gunasekera.

"The motion picture industry should be encouraged to depict safer sex practices and to depict the real consequences of unprotected sex."
