SEATTLE, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Former Nirvana drummer Chad Channing is singing, playing lead guitar and drumming for a new project, Before Cars.

Channing was behind the Nirvana kit before Dave Grohl and participated in the grunge pioneer's 1989 Sub Pop debut, "Bleach," and the 1990 EP "Blew," Rolling Stone reported.

Channing told Rolling Stone he "lost his inspiration" and left Nirvana in 1990.

The resident of Bainbridge Island west of Seattle went onto play with the Fire Ants, East of the Equator and Redband, for which he still plays bass.

Tracks for the upcoming Before Cars album are being recorded with "Bleach" producer Jack Endino.

"It's basically a compilation of stuff I've written over the years -- a lot of the songs go back as far as 1984," Channing told Rolling Stone. "For a while, I didn't feel like I was ready. But then I just thought, 'It's time to get this together.'"
