LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Adam Shankman will direct and choreograph New Line Cinema's screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Hairspray," it was announced Thursday.

As soon as he wraps up "Cheaper by the Dozen 2," Shankman will begin working with screenwriter Leslie Dixon and Tony Award-winning composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Variety reported.

John Travolta is expected to play Edna Turnblad, the role Harvey Fierstein originated onstage, while Queen Latifah is the front-runner for the role of Motormouth Maybelle, Variety said.

Production is scheduled to begin early next year in Baltimore, for a summer 2007 release.
