NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- TV talk host Oprah Winfrey is producing the Broadway musical adapted from the Alice Walker novel, "The Color Purple."

Winfrey made her film debut to critical acclaim in the 1985 film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

The New York Times Monday reported Winfrey is putting more than $1 million dollars into the musical, which will appear on the marquee as "Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Color Purple."

"It's been a secret dream of mine to be part of Broadway," Winfrey told the Times.

The show is scheduled to go into previews at The Broadway Theater Nov. 1 and open Dec. 1.
