NBC picks up Berg flick for series

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- NBC is making a weekly series out of Peter Berg's feature film, "Friday Night Lights."

The movie was produced by the network's film sibling Universal, and marks the first collaboration between the two since their merger, Daily Variety reported Tuesday.

Development of the weekly TV series is reported to be on the fast track for a fall 2006 debut, Variety said.

Berg, the former star of TV's "Chicago Hope," co-wrote and directed the 2004 high school football drama that starred Billy Bob Thornton and grossed just over $61 million at the box office.

Berg is making some changes as he writes and directs the pilot, including moving the setting from the 1980s to present day, an NBC Universal spokesman said.

"It's going to be a good picture of an American small town and the lives of these people in this town where everything revolves around the sport of football," the spokesman said.
