SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to a year in jail for attacking hip hop star Dr. Dre during the 2004 Vibe Awards in Santa Monica, Calif.

Jimmy James Johnson was also sentenced to three years probation and ordered to keep away from the rap producer for three years after he pleaded guilty Wednesday to felonious assault, AllHipHop.com reported.

Johnson asked Dre, a/k/a Andre Young, for an autograph just as he was about to take the stage for a lifetime achievement award. Police said it appeared he then attacked the hip hop legend without provocation.

The attack sparked a melee among assembled rappers and Young Buck, a member of 50 Cent's G-Unit crew, stabbed Johnson, causing a collapsed lung, police said.

Buck was arrested for his attack on Johnson and has a pretrial hearing on Sept. 26.
