Bruce Lee fans choose statue

HONG KONG, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Bruce Lee fans have chosen a pose from his 1972 "Fists of Fury" as the design for a Hong Kong statue honoring the kung-fu icon.

The design for the bare-chested bronze statue was chosen via an Internet poll in which more 57,000 votes were cast, the BBC reported Thursday.

Now, the Bruce Lee Club wants the government to contribute toward the $154,642 it will cost to cast the statue, organizers said.

"It's impossible for us to bear the whole responsibility for the fund," said Hew Kuan-yau, a member of the club's committee. "We're not asking the government to pay the total sum, but at least part of it."

Chinese sculptor Cao Chongen has been chosen to make the statue, which is scheduled to be unveiled on Nov. 27 -- Lee's 65th birthday -- on Hong Kong's Avenue of Stars.

Lee died in 1973 from a cerebral edema at the age of 32.
