British TV and radio poverty ads banned

LONDON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- "Make Poverty History" ads featuring celebs snapping their fingers every 3 seconds to signify kids dying of starvation are off British TV and radio.

The regulatory panel for British media has ruled the ads are political and therefore banned under the 2003 Communications Act, the Guardian reported.

Rapper Kanye West, pop star Justin Timberlake and U2's Bono were among the superstars featured in the ads for the "Make Poverty History" campaign.

A spokesman for the campaign said he was stunned by the decision and said it was a "moral" rather than political issue.

"This advertisement simply highlights the fact that a child dies every three seconds because of preventable poverty," Adrian Lovett said. "The millions of people who are wearing a white band or taking action as part of this campaign don't see it as a narrow party political issue. They see it as the greatest moral issue of our time."
