LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A stop motion animated musical inspired by the Manson family murders will finally be released in U.S. theaters early next year.

John Roecker's "Live Freaky! Die Freaky!" has been more than two years in the making and features a slew of rock star voices, RollingStone.com reported Friday.

Wellspring paved the way for its opening Thursday by snatching up the North American rights to the film starring Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Armstrong voices a young man who finds a copy of the book "Helter Skelter" in the year 3069 and adopts Charles Manson as his messiah. The young man goes on to preach a better world through "music, murder and mayhem," the Reporter said.

Also lending their voices are Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Transplants, actress Asia Argento and the members of Green Day, X, Good Charlotte, Blink-182, Rancid, the Transplants and AFI.
