Woman slashes Lichtenstein art

BREGENZ, Austria, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- A German armed with red paint, a knife and screwdriver slashed a painting by U.S. pop artist Roy Lichtenstein at Austria's Kunsthaus Bregenz museum.

The 35-year-old Munich resident whipped the knife from her purse and slashed "Nudes in Mirror" four times Saturday, damaging but not destroying it, the BBC reported Monday.

Staff and visitors restrained the vandal and police charged her with causing grave property damage.

The woman reportedly said she wanted to destroy the painting because it was a fake, the BBC said.

Officials said the painting was insured for $6 million and would be restored.
