Paltrow misses Venice due to plane problem

VENICE, Italy, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- "Proof" star Gwyneth Paltrow missed the "highlight" of her summer after her plane was forced to turn around en route to the Venice Film Festival.

Paltrow called into the news conference set up for her film Monday and told reporters she had an "extraordinary unpleasant" experience trying to reach Venice from New York, the BBC reported.

Technical problems forced the plane to turn around and return to New York, festival organizers said.

"I had an absolutely, extraordinarily unpleasant evening last night trying to get there," she said Monday. "I had all kinds of plane problems ... but I was very, very sorry not to be with you. It was going to be the highlight of my summer."

The film was promoted instead by her co-stars, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal.

"Proof" is in the running for the Golden Lion, the Venice Film Festival's top honor, the BBC said.
