Johnny Cash musical starts test runs

BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A new musical revue inspired by the music of the late Johnny Cash began test runs in Buffalo, N.Y., Friday.

"Ring of Fire" is being staged under the auspices of its co-creator, Richard Maltby Jr. -- who won a Tony Award for directing "Ain't Misbehavin'" and was nominated for "Fosse" -- Playbill On-Line reported Friday. Producers are aiming for a March 2006 Broadway opening for the show, subtitled "The Johnny Cash Musical Show."

Tony Award-winner Jarrod Emick is among the six actors and musicians who bring "theatrical life" to more than 35 Cash songs, Playbill said. The show does not have an actor portraying The Man in Black, who died in 2003.

Maltby conceived the show with Grammy Award nominated record producer William Meade.
