LOS ANGELES, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Comedian John Leguizamo is joining the cast of NBC's long-running hospital drama, "ER" this season, TVGuide.com reported Monday.

Sources said Leguizamo will be a new doctor at County General and appear in at least 12 episodes. It marks the first major drama series job for Leguizamo, TV Guide reported.

"ER" producers originally had their sites set on John Stamos to step in for the departed Noah Wyle, but they were forced to move in a new direction after ABC renewed Stamos' sitcom "Jake in Progress" for a second season.
